a pic a day (day 23)

a portrait of a lesser adjutant that gave an intense stare with its turquoise eyes, bare head not unlike a vulture. with its long scruffy neck hair and massive bill, the carnivore from the stork family which feeds on fishes, frogs and large insects looked highly menacing in this january 2011 photo taken at taman mini indonesia indah, jakarta.

an experiment in june 2007 using an ir filter produced a painting like effect on harvested rice fields at the back of my parents’ house in ketereh, kelantan. although it gave a surreal impact, the tedious post processes required to produce it resulted in my self declaration of never going to indulge myself in something as time wasting and unreal as that image again. from then on, i kept it as natural as possible and simple minor tweaks of brightness control, sharpening and resizing were good enough for me.

the clear sky was dotted with the non migratory painted storks, where they nest colonially in tree branches and forage in flocks in shallow waters along the lake beneath. the scene was captured on the coziness of a wooden bench at zoo negara, while the kids and their mom were feeding expensive sugarcanes to the domesticated elephants in february 2010.

taken in february 2007, one of the earliest pic using the then brand new 400d, gave me an opportunity to capture an early morning foggy landscape from the highest point at fraser’s hill silverpark, more than 1,500 meters above sea level, facing south on the titiwangsa range.

on a self drive trip in june 2010, when i reached mount cook village, which nestles at the foothill, about 12km from the summit, it was almost dark, but the reward was simply astonishing. looking towards the east, the snow covered hooker valley is a vast landscape that ends with mt. wakefield, at 2,058 meters, considered a holy mountain by some, which lies at the southern tip of mt. cook range. it also gave me a unique and enthralling experience with an extraordinary vision. this was a panorama of a pristine wonderland.

the early morning calm waters of batu lake, selangor were sheared and stirred by the boat of the women’s coxless four rowers and their oar blades, while the women focused their motivated mind and endurance, curtained by dense foliage, we the useless spectators cheered and jeered, though not at all effective in this july 2007 photo.

on a crisp clear noon in march 2007, the hot sea breeze did not help at all to quench the anxious feeling of trying to blend in with the swarm of the predominant bajau and filipino sellers and shoppers at the unkempt and ever crowded semporna market, which lies adjacent to the wooden jetty facing the celebes sea. i abandoned the effort and opted to exit and subsequently circumnavigated the market outer perimeter and was rewarded with a spectacular view instead.

while taking a stroll along the low tide beach of telok assam, bako national park, i came across this lone male wild boar, foraging for food using his hardened snout while completely ignoring my presence. an understanding was silently agreed where he became my subject with countless poses while doing his routine acts.
taken late afternoon in february 2011.

sunday afternoon at mafeking square, bright in june 2010 was totally devoid of any human being, saved by the noisy cheeps of frolicking cockatoos on the trees nearby, the winter temperature dropped considerably as the sun began its descent. after driving more than 300km from tullamarine airport via hume freeway, i was presented with a desolate town as if the denizens were hiding to give us the moment to absorb all the splendid ambiance of the surroundings.

an unplanned river cruise in december 2010 along the muddy muar river gave us a breathtaking view of the masjid jamek sultan ismail, an identical and bigger version of the original masjid jamek sultan ibrahim. completed in 2002, the biggest mosque in muar was a letdown when given said resources and budget, it ultimately ended up with an exact architecture, albeit a bit picturesque.
