a pic a day (day 93)

during our 4 hour stay at the not quite safe distance of pulau sertung, we managed to observe more than 10 explosive eruptions expelled from the volcanic vent of anak krakatau. this pic, taken at noon in january 2011, was the closest my borrowed lens could capture of the hot gases and tephra spewed by the famous volcano.

in late january 2011, waking up to a clear sunday morning, we decided to visit the national science centre at bukit kiara. what awaited us there were impressive gardens, beautiful artificial landscape, unique architectures and a damn hot weather, but ultimately it gave us nice pictures to look at. what’s inside the geodesic dome were another wonders to behold, fully interactive science galleries and the limited run dinos alive! exhibitions although the kids were scared to death of the robotic pre-historic creatures.

if you stood overlooking directly to the south from queenstown, a spectacle of extraordinary abundance lies in wait across lake wakatipu. cecil peak at 1,974m (left) and walter peak at 1,815m (right) are named after cecil walter rees, the son of the first settler of queenstown. the breathtaking panorama of the two most noticed peaks (unless if you happen to notice the vignetting first) from the town was photographed in june 2010.

soaking wet after a heavy rain at the end of the monsoon season, the four of us set out on a quest to find dinner where our mission collided with this lone zebra dove, symmetrically reflected in a puddle of rainwater while also foraging for food along kuching waterfront near the main bazaar. february 2011.

a pair of coconut palm trees acted as a perfect monumental gateway (while ignoring the meddling banana and papaya leaves at the edges of the frame) to the vast rice fields beyond. taken early morning facing west near the birthplace of my father in kg. padang kedondong, chengal in october 2007.

a kayaking duo was found dilligently pedalling back towards the estuary and the south china sea 2 km south while we were moving upstream. an idyllic 1½ hour eco tour along cherating river gave an exclusive insight into the habitats of the mangrove wilderness with special appearances by a slumbering python, edgy monitors and the docile but venomous banded kraits. although they semi-expertly camouflaged behind overhanging tree branches and leaves, the enthusiasm and knowledge of our guide made detection and sightings of those shy creatures easy. april 2011.

it was silly of me not to include any wide perspective of queenstown and its neighbours in the previous post. taken from the gusty and chilly viewing deck of the skyline gondola restaurant, the resort town is adorned and augmented with the charm of lake wakatipu and the snow covered the remarkables (allegedly named because they are one of only two mountain ranges in the world which run directly north to south). late afternoon, june 2010.
